In 1787, a heavy black stone was found in the small quartz and feldspar mine of Ytterby, not far away from Stockholm (Sweden). This discovery became the start for a remarkable development: Several researchers, mostly Swedish, discovered at least eight new elements in minerals found in Ytterby. Four of them were named after this locality: Yttrium (Y), Ytterbium (Yb), Erbium (Er) and Terbium (Tb), an unbeatable world record!
The association Ytterby gruva was founded in 2015. Its objective is to:
...spread knowledge about the mine and its history
...to find a long therm solution for the ownership and the management of the mine
...to document and coordinate all research related to the mine.
